A hell-like City in the Sea of Fire

This painting by Nakano Kenichi is a painting that was drawn on the day of Hiroshima and its a depiction of what Japan looked like after the terrible attack. Being only an amateur artist back when he painted this, his paintings seem more anime like and less sophisticated. But he is able to demonstrate the incident with a certain message. He uses the light color of yellow, red, and orange in order to make the painting give a sense of suffering and burning. When looking at the paintings similar to this one, the use of warm colors is shown throughout all the paintings, especially yellow, orange, and shade of red. The high flames of fire as the background make it seem almost exaggerated, but knowing the catastrophic incident makes it believable. He did not aim for reality in this painting but rather aimed to quickly sketch the images he was seeing outside of his house; which consisted of death, suffering, and pain. Even the skin color of the people are changed into tanned and light brown color in order to emphasize the rate of the burn that the bomb caused. He also writes Japanese characters on the painting that state, “living Hell in this world”, which is similar to the title. Thus, emphasizing the high flames of fire in the background that makes the painting’s setting look like hell with the surround of firing walls. The difference of a woman standing and many suffering, but still living also gives it the imagery of hell. Another analysis is the image of people running around in the background but no able to escape because of the walls of fire which makes it seem as hell is imposed in Japan and it is impossible to escape out of it.
The painting clearly shows the power of destruction humans have to use against each other. In other perspective, the bombing can be seen to be the only option possible for the United States of America but after looking at this painting, it makes people change views of Hiroshima.

Hitler Rally seen from behind rows of Nazi Soldiers

During the time of World War I and World War II, the art style in European countries varied from place to place but a famous way of persuading nationalism was propaganda. Posters of the Nazi’s is a perfect example of propaganda’s that were made strategically to honor Hitler, or portray him as a savior of Germany. Propaganda consisted of short phrases or words that stated the savior of Germany or the fight from the struggle. It also included simple portraits or pictures of Hitler or people that made the public believe what they read and saw. Ultimately, the propaganda honored Germany and the Nazi party especially in each poster of propaganda.
In this picture of the Nazi Army demonstrates the unity in a group and the power Hitler really had. It honors the swastika, sign of the Nazis, by centering it with three flags in the center of the page. Off to the left side, is located the bird that was usually inputted into German propaganda because of Hitler. The specific color use of black and white also gives it the simplicity but powerful statement because it shows the reality of the German life. The endless looking rows of soldiers in the picture also shows the power of Hitler and how men have been able to persuade countries into any command. The power of man being able to convert someone emotionally and mentally to follow order enthusiastically even if they are order such as Hitler’s.
This propaganda also shows the power of the Nazi and provides nationalism through such a picture because it shows the unity and enthusiasm people have. Instead of looking cruel, the picture seems like a place of peace and brotherhood which was a tactic the German’s used in propaganda, which was to make people think they were a part of something that was uprising for the better.

Charles Darwin

The photograph by Julia Margaret Cameron of Charles Darwin was something that many British people were not familiar to. Not because of Charles Darwin, but because of the work of photography seen as art. This portrait type of photography by Cameron is supposed to seem like a painting and specifically, oil painting. The actual photograph was taken by Julia during a summer vacation in Freshwater, where Julia took breaks, and where Charles Darwin came with his family for vacation also. As she was known as a uprising photographer, Darwin asked her himself to take a portrait photograph of him and paid her money to take the picture.
In the picture, Cameron is not trying to portray Charles Darwin as a hero or someone she praises. Julia was always into capturing the picture as it really looked like in reality because she firmly believed that the essence of reality and beauty portrayed “invisible beauty” that would be diminished with decorations. The photograph is not pleasing when looked at in detail with the messy beard of Charles Darwin and no decorative or staged poses done by Charles Darwin. This gives it an elegant look for the eye, and makes it seem natural and in action. He seems in action because he is not directly looking at the camera lens, but he seems like he is observing something by him or taking interest in something. The work is definitely portraying the actual truth of Charles Darwin and pieces like this done by Julia have changed photography for today and made such thing considered as art.
The art piece itself does show the power of man and how the invention of technology like a camera can change the field of art for the next century and the advancement in technology man has able to accomplish. Charles Darwin himself is also portrayed in this photograph and he is one of the greatest men to progress humanity for mankind. It honors Charles Darwin in this photograph not by decoration, but by the simplicity and truth image of him.

School of Athens

During the Renaissance era of history, many philosophers began to question the statements of Christianity and tried to make humans the power of the Earth. Beginning to prove how everything runs by us and on Earth. Therefore, Raphael was commissioned to paint four different perspective of life and the “School of Athens” was painted in order to represent knowledge(The School of Athens). This was an era in which scholars began to bring ratios and perfect forms of the human body into social influence. Art was influenced by the use of perfect ratios in order to portray an ideal person. A big part of the Renaissance era was that the Church began to lose followers and power because of the scientific and philosophical views scholars presented. Also, the corruption within the church made it difficult for the followers to trust the popes and high church officials. This painting made a significant mark in history because of the way Raphael honors philosophy and scholarly work rather than the work of the church and Christianity. This was one the few original paintings that gave credit to philosophy.
Raphael paints this piece with central focal point as the two men pointing up and down; Plato and Aristotle respectively(The School of Athens). Plato is pointing up towards the heavens which indicates the power of God and to leave all meanings of the world up to the heaven and the church. In contrast, Aristotle has his hands towards the floor meaning the Earth, which states that he gives power to the people on Earth and everything can be answered by humans. These two figures are the main characters in this painting, but Raphael paints many other well-known figures such as Pythagorus. The use of a arc or semi-circle as boarder of the painting is a way of seeing Renaissance art in this piece, also the vanishing point on Aristotle’s hand making the symmetry and harmony of this painting idealistic. (The school of Athens)
This painting shows the power of man and how man was able to prove the mysteries of Earth by studies and proves.

Coalbrookdale by Night

“Coalbrookdale by Night”
During the industrial revolution in England, there were many changes environmentally and socially that many pieces of art demonstrates. In “Coalbrookdale by Night” by Philipp Jacques Loutherbourg in 1801 shows his interpretation of how a night looked like in Coalbrookdale(Coalbrookdale by Night). The Industrial Revolution was a phase in history that shaped the modern technological advances today by providing a way to produce many copies of a certain object. It was a time where thousands of people were able to work in factories and make a living for their family with brutal work hours and working conditions(Montagna, Joseph). This way of transforming from cultivating crops to urbanization spread along Europe and Britain was especially a top contributor of the movement. People argued about the conditions they were living in and the sanitation of the factories. Changing the environment with pollution of mining and burning in factories also affected the views of the industrialization. Therefore, in this painting by Jacques, he presents a view of the industrialization in Coalbrookdale, which is the first coke-fired furnace of the industrial revolution(McKiernan,Mike).
Philipp is able to convey his perspective of the industrial revolution by using, “fire landscapes”, which was a style of art used by many artists whom emphasized fire across the artwork itself in order to portray the environment. The artist tries to portray a picture with two sides of happiness and warning; happiness of the industrialization providing jobs and help for people to purchase objects more cheap and a warning by showing the pollution of smoke rising into the air. Philip incorporates a dog running by at the bottom of the page, with a family including a mother and son looking out the hillside at the factory. He also puts in a carriage with a man at the back coming down the the center of the painting. All these things seem very idealistic and partly staged by Jacques and many art critics believe it is to be staged. His background as a theater producer has given credence to this statement and how he might have painted this piece without attention of making it natural.
This piece let’s us see the power of man in the industrial side and the advancement people have been able to achieve. The power of man being able to pollute the habitat for all living objects and the power of man being able to build such powerful machines and create strategic ways of making life easier.
